Market context
Market figures reflect indicative August 2026 collector bands in nominal U.S. dollars for correctly documented, usable examples. One-off works cars and prototypes are noted as having 'no liquid market'.
Maintenance patterns by engineering generation
Maintenance patterns by engineering generation For 1947–1960s Colombo/Lampredi/Jano cars, the largest financial danger is often not a routine mechanical failure but loss of historical correctness. Chassis tubes may have been replaced after accidents; engines were swapped in period; bodies were rebodied for competition or fashion; and early Ferrari itself recycled components. Pre-purchase work therefore requires archival chassis/engine/body-number research before compression tests or paint inspection. Mechanically, Weber carburetor synchronization, dual distributors/magnetos, valve clearances, cooling, oil leakage, drum brakes, wire wheels, alloy-body fatigue and corrosion between dissimilar metals are recurring themes. The 125 S itself demonstrates the historical problem: its original cars were dismantled and components reused.
For Dino/308/328/Mondial-era V6/V8 Ferraris, timing-belt history is one of the first questions. Hagerty’s 308 guidance explicitly recommends preventive timing-belt replacement on roughly a three-to-five-year schedule. Fuel hoses, aged fuse/relay boards, slow window motors, cooling hoses, carburetor/K-Jetronic setup, suspension bushings and rust on steel cars matter as well. Fiberglass 308 GTBs require careful inspection of original resin/fiberglass and prior accident repairs rather than conventional metal-body assumptions.
For Boxer/Testarossa cars, servicing is unusually labor-intensive because major belt work involves removing the drivetrain. Fuel hoses and tanks, cooling plumbing, clutch and transaxle health, old metric/ TRX tire availability and differential components can make a superficially inexpensive car costly. On a collector-grade BB/Testarossa/512 TR/F512 M, several years of documented specialist invoices are generally more valuable evidence than an exceptionally low odometer reading.

39 === For 348/F355, the engine-out belt-service architecture remains, while the F355 adds well-documented manifold, catalyst and valve-guide concerns. Hagerty’s 1994–99 F355 buyer’s guide notes that cracked exhaust manifolds are nearly ubiquitous in original form, catalysts fail and valve guides required replacement on a meaningful proportion of cars. F1-transmission versions further add pump, accumulator , actuator and clutch-wear costs; Spiders add power-roof hydraulics.
For 360/575/F430-era cars, Ferrari moved toward easier service access and, on some engines, chains rather than recurring belt replacement, but the systems became more electronically interdependent. F1 hydraulic pumps/actuators and clutch wear , ball joints, magnetic dampers, exhaust manifolds on F430s, sticky soft- touch coatings, engine mounts and battery voltage are now familiar specialist inspection points. Manual- transmission cars increasingly carry a large collector premium, meaning it is essential to distinguish genuine factory manuals from aftermarket conversions.
For 458/F12/488 and later DCT cars, the engine itself is frequently less troublesome than the surrounding electronic/mechatronic ecosystem: DCT speed/position sensors, electronically controlled dampers, batteries, front-lift systems, carbon-ceramic wear and sticky/aging cabin surfaces matter . Turbo 488/F8 cars add thermal-management and turbo oil/coolant plumbing. Exact dealer-service campaigns and ECU software history should be queried by VIN.
For LaFerrari, SF90 and other hybrids, high-voltage battery health has become part of collector due diligence, not a theoretical future concern. RM’s 2026 catalogue for Jay Kay’s LaFerrari records a Ferrari high-voltage battery replacement in January 2023. SF90s add three motors, inverters, hybrid cooling, brake- by-wire and plug-in charging hardware; a traditional combustion-only pre-purchase inspection is therefore inadequate.
For Challenge, GT, GTC, GT3/GTE and XX cars, mileage is a poor proxy for wear . Buyers need engine and gearbox hours, over-rev data, crash/chassis-repair history, fuel-cell expiration, fire-bottle dates, seat/ harness homologation, wheel crack-testing and software/data-logger access. A “cheap” ex-race Ferrari with an expired fuel cell and engine near rebuild hours can immediately require six figures of recommissioning.
Notable-owner and cultural-history caveats Ferrari’s own historical material is preferable to celebrity-list websites because it links named owners to specific chassis. Factory material identifies Gianni Agnelli with 166 MM chassis 0064 M, Porfirio Rubirosa with a Pinin Farina 500 Mondial, Alfonso de Portago with the 1956 250 GT Berlinetta, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Princess Soraya with a 410 Superamerica, and the Rossellini/Ingrid Bergman 375 MM that inspired Grigio Ingrid. RM independently documents Ralph Lauren as the original owner of the Giallo Modena F50 sold for $9.245 million and Jay Kay as the original owner of the Signal Green LaFerrari sold in Monaco in 2026.
Film/television associations should be handled carefully because replicas are common. The 308 is genuinely inseparable from Magnum, P .I. and the Testarossa from Miami Vice, but the supposed Daytona used in the early Miami Vice seasons was not a factory 365 GTB/4. Likewise, the famous “250 GT California” in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was a replica. These distinctions matter in a research dataset because “model depicted” is not the same field as “authentic Ferrari chassis appearing on screen.” 99 100 26 101 39
Sources & unresolved data
Source hierarchy and unresolved data The principal source hierarchy used here is: Ferrari model cards and Ferrari History/Archive material first; Ferrari-linked dealer archive solely to reconstruct the current page’s entry list; auction-house catalogues for serial-level provenance and transaction prices; specialist technical archives such as SBR where Ferrari’s JavaScript protection prevented direct retrieval; and CLASSIC.COM/Hagerty only for broad market and ownership data. Ferrari’s model pages provide especially strong structured data when indexed: the 625 TF, 250 GT SWB, F50, F12berlinetta and 488 Spider examples demonstrate that the factory records engine architecture, bore/stroke, displacement, output, suspension, gearbox, tire sizes, dimensions and performance in a highly consistent schema.
The biggest unresolved fields are torque and acceleration for many pre-1980 cars; exact body dimensions for hand-built coachbuilt models; definitive production counts for frequently converted early works racers; and production totals for many modern regular-series Ferraris, which Ferrari does not publicly disclose model by model. Those fields should remain null/n/p in a production database unless a chassis register , factory build sheet or authoritative model-specific monograph is added. A false zero or guessed dimension would be materially worse than a documented null.
The 312 nomenclature deserves a special database rule. Ferrari’s own archived 1972 press documentation says the flat-12 prototype was officially 312/P, not “312 PB”; “PB” became common journalistic/historian terminology to distinguish it from the 1969 V12 312 P . A rigorous database should therefore store official_name = "312 P" and common_alias = "312 PB" rather than replacing the factory designation.
Similarly, store the 1984 car as official_archive_name = "GTO" with common_alias = "288 GTO", and retain the Daytona distinction as official_name = "365 GTB/4" / common_alias = "Daytona". Those alias fields prevent both search failures and historical nomenclature drift. Ferrari’s current archive explicitly labels the 1984 entry “GTO,” while Ferrari’s own berlinetta history calls the 365 GTB/4 by its official designation.
Finally, auction records should be modeled separately from valuation ranges. A $51.705-million 330 LM/250 GTO, $30.255-million 412 P , $28.05-million 290 MM or $17.875-million Enzo does not prove that every example of the model is worth that amount; each result encodes chassis history, originality, specification, mileage, famous ownership and sale context. Conversely, generic market benchmarks tend to understate the value of unique alloy/competition/celebrity cars. Keeping public_auction_record, market_benchmark, typical_private_range, provenance_adjustment, and source_date as separate fields is the most defensible structure for downstream ingestion.
